SEO vs. agentic SEO for service businesses
SEO helps customers discover useful pages in search. AI search optimization helps those same facts be found and cited in assistant answers. Agentic website work also considers supported actions, such as an inquiry or booking. They share foundations, but each outcome needs its own evidence.

Consumer and local SEO: help the customer find the right page
Consumer SEO describes discovery by people looking for a service. Local SEO adds the place and coverage context. For a home-service business, useful work includes accessible pages, clear service information, accurate business details, relevant internal links, and credible evidence. A service-area claim should reflect where your team actually works; creating many interchangeable city pages does not make them useful.
AEO and GEO: help an answer cite the right information
Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization are commonly used labels for AI-answer visibility work. The practical questions are whether the system can access your information, understand it, and select it for the customer’s question. Google says ordinary SEO foundations still apply to its AI features and that special AI files or schema are not required. A machine-readable file alone is not proof that an assistant recommends a business.
Agentic SEO: connect discovery with a supported next step
At Bay, agentic work also considers the action after discovery. An assistant might help a customer understand eligibility or navigate to an inquiry. A booking connection needs real availability, supported tools, confirmation rules, and a clear boundary between requesting a visit and confirming it. A remodel estimate may require human review; a defined maintenance visit may support scheduling. The business decides those rules.
Use three separate tests
First, test technical access: can a public page be fetched and does it expose the relevant facts? Second, use an unbranded buyer prompt: which businesses does the system discover without being given your name? Third, supply the URL and ask for a factual summary to test comprehension. Record the date, platform, model when visible, prompt, and sources. Passing the third test does not prove success in the second.
Ask for evidence before paying for an AI ranking claim
Ask the provider to show the exact prompt, answer, source link, and test conditions. Check whether the business was named in the question, whether the result was sponsored, and whether the source actually supports the claim. One favorable screenshot is a sample, not an enduring position. Different sessions, locations, models, and search settings can produce different results.
Choose work that improves the customer experience too
A clear service page, accurate pricing explanation, maintained project evidence, and a working inquiry route are useful to people as well as assistants. Start with the gaps that can be verified. Publish improvements, keep a release record, and use available search and inquiry data to choose the next task. No provider controls every search engine or assistant’s recommendations.
